Sandalwood essential oil is extracted by steam distillation from the roots and heartwood of some species of sandalwood trees, primarily Santalum Album, a small parasitic tree native to India and Sri Lanka. This tree is considered to be one of the most precious trees in the world, due to its products’ consumption throughout the globe. The tree has to be at least thirty years old before it is ready to produce sandalwood oil in the form that it is considered natural.

In folk tradition, it is known as one of the oldest perfumes and medicinal oils used to treat morning sickness, skin problems, stomach ache, urinary infections, etc. This aromatic oil is also used as an antidepressant, antiseptic, and occasionally as an aphrodisiac. It is a very popular ingredient in Ayurvedic (ancient Indian) and traditional Chinese medicine. Modern researchers have found some additional benefits of the use of Sandalwood oil like wound healing and soothing effects, skin cancer guard, anxiety control, etc. It can also be employed as a flavour ingredient in some most dishes, as well as in soft and alcoholic drinks. The free alcohol found in sandalwood oil is santalol and is responsible for its scent and flavour.

Sandalwood aromatic oil is usually considered as one of the most valuable oils, hence the price. Also, some official studies have confirmed that sandalwood has health benefits, only increasing its already extravagant reputation.

In aromatherapy it has wide use in:

- Skincare: treating acne, dry skin, aftershave rash, etc.
- Respiratory illnesses: bronchitis, dry coughs, laryngitis, sore throat.
- Digestive problems: diarrhoea, nausea.
- Nervous system issues: depression, stress, insomnia.

Home use of sandalwood is widespread too. Since its low toxicity, sandalwood essential oil can be applied directly to the skin, used in an infuser, heated up in a small kettle to scent your home, even in your bath. The allergic reactions to sandalwood oil is quite rare, however, if you are concerned about an allergic reaction, just test it before use by applying a very small amount to your skin. Wait for about 1 hour and, if nothing happens, you are safe to continue.

Our Sandalwood essential oil comes from the central parts of Sri Lanka and has soft, woody and slightly flowery scent.
