Melissa Oil

Melissa oil, also known as Lemon Balm Essential Oil or Bee Balm, is extracted by steam distillation from the leaves and flowering tops of the plant. The tree is native to the Mediterranean region, however, it has spread and now it is cultivated in Spain, France, Germany, and even Russia. The plant is approximately 70cm high, it is bushy with bright green leaves and white or pink flowers.

Initially the herb was used for medicinal purposes, mainly neurological anomalies, but also heart disorders, anxiety, lethargy, etc. Over the centuries its use extended to digestive and respiratory issues, menstrual cycle problems, and insect sting remedies. To this day it still helps people with depressive illnesses and other emotionally related diseases. Some recent studies show that oil can help people suffering from insomnia and other sleeping disorders, cold sores, even relieving indigestion. Because of its non-toxic attributes the natural Melissa oil can also be used by a child.

Although classified as non-toxic oil, some people with sensitive skin might experience dermal irritation where dilution with some other less scented oil may help.

In aromatherapy it is used in:

- Skin care: allergies, insect bites, can also serve as insect repellent.
- Respiratory problems: asthma, bronchitis, chronic coughs.
- Digestive system problems: Indigestion, nausea.
- Genito-urinary issues: menstrual problems.
- Nervous systems problems: depression, anxiety, insomnia, hypertension, etc.

Our Melissa oil comes from India and differs from its Mediterranean cousin. It has a pleasant, lemony smell but is somewhat sweeter than its French counterpart.
